I ran into a few troublesome issues recently when building a new rom kitchen environment based on Oracle Virtual Box and LuBuntu. I want to help other folks avoid the same headaches I have dealt with. So here we go...
First, you need to download the following:

NOTE: THE ATTACHED TOOLS ARE FOR x86/32-bit Linux distributions ONLY! - I spent an hour scratching my head on a ubuntu 64-bit install as to why I couldn't run these tools. You have to be using a 32-bit flavor of linux.

A tool for unpacking the "logo.bin" file so you can edit the images that appear during boot time as well as graphics for other low level system stuff.

Attached is a zip package. Inside is an EXE file for Windows which will install Kingo Root software. I have successfully used this to root the Cube U27GT tablet which uses the MT8127 chipset and runs Android 4.4.

MTK Droid tools - a suite of windows tools with a nice GUI interface - allows you to backup your device's firmware / do a rom dump from any MTK device... among other things.

Use this tool to resize your partitions which are specified in the EBR files for your device's firmware. Further instructions on use can be found at the reference link below!
